Kashmir Reports First Cases of Emerging Covid-19 Threat

Srinagar, May 29 – Kashmir has confirmed its first cases of the newly emerging Covid-19 variant, with two postgraduate dental students testing positive at Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar.

Health officials revealed that both students, women hailing from Kerala and currently enrolled in MDS programs at Government Dental College, Srinagar, recently returned from their hometowns and reported Covid-like symptoms soon after.

“They were tested at GMC Srinagar, and both samples returned positive,” an official from the Health Department stated. “They have been isolated in accordance with the Covid-19 protocol.”

This marks the first confirmed detection of the new Covid-19 strain in Jammu and Kashmir, triggering heightened surveillance across the region. Authorities are now closely monitoring individuals with recent travel history, particularly from states reporting rising cases.

The cases in Srinagar come amid a national surge in infections, largely attributed to emerging sub-variants. As per the Union Health Ministry, India currently has over 1,000 active Covid-19 cases. Kerala leads with 430 cases, followed by Maharashtra at 210.

The predominant strain in circulation, JN.1, is a sub-variant of the fast-spreading Omicron. Another variant, NB.1.8.1, is under close observation due to its potential for higher transmissibility and stronger cell-binding properties, raising concerns over the risk of broader community transmission.

Kashmir Reports will continue to monitor and update readers on developments related to the evolving Covid-19 situation.
